Towards the end of the Second World War Sergei Prokofiev wrote his Fifth Symphony, a heroic work that seems to presage victory. It became one of the most popular 20th-century symphonies, but the much less frequently performed Second remains Prokofiev’s most original. Written in the Paris of the Roaring Twenties it is the ‘music of iron and steel’, as the composer himself aptly put it.
