Rimsky-Korsakov sailed the world, Berlioz travelled throughoutEurope. Their broad world view – and that of Wagner, Mahler and many others – is at the centre of this festival. Edition 2011 is an invitation to look across borders, with the sea as a symbol for everything that connects countries and peoples.

- Valery Gergiev

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Lohengrin! This mystical knight on the back of a swan skims over the water to the city opening our 16th Festival. Visions of the temporal and the eternal colour this opening concert: a revelation of the Sea and the Other Side.

Wagner Voorspel Lohengrin
Britten Suite from Death in Venice
